2 Postdoc positions in Biophysics and single molecule microscopy

Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering two 1-year postdoctoral positions with possibility to extend. The expected starting date is 1st June 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The application deadline is 30th of March 2022.

Description of the scientific environment

The position is in the group of Associate Professor Nikos S Hatzakis. The group focuses on structure-function correlations of enzymes by single molecule studies and the role of protein dynamics on biomolecule recognition and cellular response regulation.

Short Project description

The post-doc will be working on establishing fluorescent microscopy assays often at the single single molecule level to study the interaction of proteins with model membrane systems, ligands and glycans. They will be using single particle fluorescent microscopy techniques (TIRF and confocal) and quantitative image analysis. The post-docs will be interacting tightly either with machine learning groups or/and with synthetic glycochemistry groups. The post may also include performance of other duties.

Formal requirements

In order to be considered, applicant must have:

  • A PhD degree either in Biophysics, or in Physics, or Nanoscience, or similar field
  • A documented experience in
    • fluorescence microscopy (e.g. TIRF, confocal)
    • protein functional or/and structural characterization preferably at single molecule level,
    • statistical analysis and computational image analysis.
    • writing and understanding scientific software including Matlab and Python for quantitative image analysis, and treating large datasets and experience with code sharing using git/github
  • Excellent and documented English communication skills

Applicants without these qualifications will not be considered.

  • The ideal candidate should be motivated, have a strong publication record, be able to work independently within an international, cross-disciplinary group and to supervise students.

Skills of additional interest include

  • Expertise in single molecule microscopy
  • Previous experience in carbohydrate degrading proteins and sugars.
  • Experience with handling model membrane systems (nanodisc or liposomes).
  • Expertise in biochemistry and protein characterization
  • Previous experience in single molecule fluorescence microscopy building.
  • Documented expertise of working in an international multicultural environment

Application

Application must be submitted online by clicking on "APPLY NOW" below.

The application must include:

  1. Motivation/Cover letter (max 0.5 page)
  2. Short (2 pgs max) CV including, work/research experience, language skills and other skills relevant for the position
  3. A certified/signed copy of a) PhD certificate. If the PhD is not completed, a written statement from the supervisor will do.
  4. List of publications and patents
  5. Two reference letters (if available)

Application deadline:  30th of March 2022, 23:59 GMT +2.

We reserve the right not to consider materials received after the deadline.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee.
