The advertised postdoc positions are located within the DEMNORM (Democratic Norms) project. The positions are full-time fixed-term position for up to 3 years. The expected starting date is 1 September 2022 or as agreed upon. The positions are fully-funded by the Carlsberg Foundation and the Aarhus University Research Foundation. Besides the salary costs for travels and a visiting period abroad are funded by the project.

The postdoc positions will focus on two distinct and different aspects of the overall project:

Postdoc 1:

Qualifications: Applicants for postdoc 1 are expected to hold – or be close to completing – a PhD in political science, economics, sociology, or social psychology. We expect applicants to have excellent knowledge and experience with (quasi-)experimental designs and survey design, strong command of statistical software (STATA and/or R), and a willingness to acquire new methodological skills. Some experience with quantitative text analysis is an additional asset but not required. Applicants are expected to have an excellent command of spoken and written English.

Postdoc 2:
Focus“Democratic norms on the elite-level” using quantitative text analysis and potentially quasi-experimental designs, mostly focusing on questions of media effects and political communication

Qualifications: Applicants for postdoc 2 are expected to hold – or be close to completing – a PhD in political science, economics, sociology, or social psychology. We expect applicants to have excellent knowledge and experience with quantitative research designs, strong command of statistical software (STATA and/or R), and a willingness to acquire new methodological skills. Some experience with quantitative text analysis and/or experimental research designs is an additional asset but not required. Applicants are expected to have an excellent command of spoken and written English.

Please explicitly state in your application for which of the two postdoc positions you seek to apply to. The commission will decide if your application might also be suitable for the respective other postdoc position.

In addition to a CV and proof of PhD degree (or the near completion of a PhD degree), interested applicants should provide a cover letter motivating why you are interested in being part of the DEMNORM project and how you can contribute to the success of the project, outlining potential ideas for research relevant to the project, and how your current research potentially already interacts with the research interest of Associate Professor Daniel Bischof and/or the research project (max. 2 pages).

Job description

As members of the project, successful applicants will become part of the vibrant and well-connected Department of Political Science at Aarhus University and the research team led by Associate Professor Daniel Bischof.

Research
The postdoctoral researchers will be employed as part of the DEMNORM project team, are expected to engage in collaborative research with the project team members and must demonstrate ambition and ability to produce high-quality research. In the optimal case, applicants can contribute with an original research project that deals with one or more of DEMNORM’s research questions. In any case, we expect postdocs to take a leading role in developing, designing, administering, and coordinating research activities in several countries within the project and to contribute to publications in top outlets. The project offers significant funding for data collection, research assistants, travel, and workshops. While research will be carried out in collaboration within the project, applicants are expected to develop and conduct their own independent research as well. This means that there will be room to pursue and conduct independent research besides the research conducted within the project.

Teaching
The positions imply a small teaching obligation equivalent to one course per year. If the applicant is interested, a one-year further extension in return for additional teaching might be negotiable after year two, depending on the applicant’s prior teaching experience and the Department’s need for teaching capacity in the relevant years.

Salary
Salary is according to the Danish pay schedule. The Danish pay schedule depends on several factors, one being previous experience in the job. Thus, the salary offers will vary to some extent across applicants. To nevertheless give an indicative idea of the salary to foreign applicants (prior to tax, pension): on average approx. gross 33,800 DKK (4,540 Euros) per month. Furthermore, as a foreigner (with the support by HR) you can apply for the Expat Scheme for Researchers and Key Employees which can reduce your taxes for 7 years (you can find more information and see if you might be eligible here).

The DEMNORM project

The DEMNORM project aims to understand which role democratic norms, on the citizens- and elite-level, play for democratic stability. In the last decade many democracies have been facing challenges from within: the US Capitol was stormed by a violent mob, the rule of law has come into question in some democracies (e.g. Poland), and authoritarian candidates are on the rise (e.g. Hungary's Viktor Orbán). As a result, many journalists and academics argue that currently "democratic norms'' among the public and political elites are eroding. DEMNORM seeks to understand
  • what we conceptually mean when we refer to “norms” in the context of democracy,
  • where such norms come from (e.g. the role of social networks),
  • how they erode (e.g. due to anti-democratic slant by political elites),
  • and which role they play for democratic stability in general.
The DEMNORM project will be a major research project (2022-2025) located at the Department of Political Science (Aarhus University), primarily funded by a Carlsberg Foundation Young Researcher Fellowship and supported by a Starting Grant of the Aarhus University Research Foundation. The project is led by Associate Professor Daniel Bischof. The core team will consist of two postdocs, one PhD student and research assistants. More information can be found on the project webpage.

Who we are

The Department of Political Science is one of the six departments at Aarhus BSS - one of the five faculties at Aarhus University. Aarhus BSS unites the business and social science-related research fields and brings them closer together to reflect the close relationship between society and the business community. As part of a Top 100 university, Aarhus BSS and the Department of Political Science have achieved the distinguished AASCB, AMBA and EQUIS accreditations.

At the Department of Political Science, we emphasise a dynamic and flexible research and teaching profile characterised by pluralism and openness. With around 100 academic staff members and 45-50 PhD students, we offer a lively and ambitious research and teaching environment.

The research carried out at the department not only covers a variety of political science disciplines, but also represents a broad scope of methodological approaches. This not only enables us to focus on new problem areas as they appear on the national and international political arenas, but also allows us to contribute actively to the development of the discipline. We also emphasise communicating our research results to the political-administrative system and to the public in general.
