Associate Professor Global Performance History

 


Do you enjoy working in an interdisciplinary research setting and do you want to be active in a variety of educational programmes? The Amsterdam School of Historical Studies is looking for a dynamic and ambitious associate professor Global Performance History. ASH is one of the five Research Schools within the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research. ASH represents and fosters the study of the human past from Antiquity to the present day. It brings together more than 200 academics from Amsterdam’s Faculty of Humanities, who participate in ca. 25 research groups.

 

You will be based in the department Art and Culture Studies, in the Theatre Studies group. Art and Culture Studies is a large academic department that connects research and teaching in Art History, Heritage and Memory Studies, Museum Studies, Cultural Studies, Book Studies, Music Studies, and Theatre Studies and appreciates interdisciplinary collaborations. Theatre Studies includes a BA and a MA programme, a Dual Master International Dramaturgy and is part of the Research Master Art and Performance Studies.

 

To strengthen its senior staff, the department of Art and Culture Studies invites applications for an associate professor Global Performance History.

 

What are you going to do

 

You will provide teaching in a dynamic context with ample opportunities for the development of innovative teaching methods. You will contribute to ASH with research activities related to the historical dimensions of performance cultures, including theatre, dance, rituals and everyday life performances, departing from global, transnational and transcultural historical perspectives. We are particularly looking for candidates with expertise in historical performance practices in its various facets (textual, embodied, spatial, etc.), preferably with respect to colonial encounters and the ways these encounters shaped the West and Non-West alike.  

 

You are expected to take a leading role in the ASH research group Historical Theatre Research: Text, Performance, and Production of Knowledgedeveloping new terrains of research and envisioning an inspiring and relevant future research agenda. Moreover, you will be actively involved in inter- and transdisciplinary historical research at the UvA, establishing and seeking out co-operations with scholars in the history of religion, art history, architecture, musicology and cultural studies. You will collaborate with archival and artistic institutions in The Netherlands and abroad. 

 

The successful candidate will teach and develop innovative teaching activities both as part of and outside the programme of the Theatre Studies group, which includes the Bachelor and Master programmes Theatre Studies, the Dual MA Program International Dramaturgy and the Research Master program Art and Performance Studies. Preferably, you will contribute to develop interdisciplinary reaching activities together with staff members from other groups in the Art and Culture Studies department. He or she will supervise both bachelor and master students, as well as PhD’s.

 

The candidate will independently conduct research in the areas mentioned, resulting in contributions to leading international publications. The candidate will be expected to raise funds for and be involved in (international) research projects. You will also take an active role in other research activities, ranging from research seminars to board memberships and grant applications. Finally, the candidate will expected play a role in the departmental organization, taking responsibility, together with the professor holding the Chair of Theatre Studies, for a administrative and managerial duties within and outside the department of Art and Culture Studies.

 

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • conducting independent research in historical performance studies from a global perspective, resulting in academic publications in peer-reviewed international journals and/or books;
  • actively pursuing external funding for research, notably funding from research councils, national as well as international;
  • actively contributing to and developing national and international research networks and other forms of cooperation;
  • actively contributing to the research activities of ASH;
  • developing, coordinating and teaching courses in both Dutch and English, in the bachelor and master programmes;
  • supervising Bachelor and Master theses and tutoring students; co-supervising PhD theses;
  • actively contributing to the development and improvement of the broader teaching programmes in the department;
  • taking part in committees and working groups and carrying out departmental administrative tasks as directed.

 

What do you have to offer

 

You are a renowned, dynamic, collegial and motivated researcher with expertise in the historical research of theatre and performance in all its facets. You have developed innovative research with a broad and interdisciplinary scope, and have a track record in applications for considerable funds, and experience in organizing large research projects. The candidate is keenly involved in current historical debates in the arts and humanities. You are able to position your research in comparative and transhistorical studies of performance, and can develop (new) historiographic approaches, especially out of a global perspective, with a critical attitude towards Western epistemic systems. An interest in theories and practices of archiving and curating intangible heritage as well as an openness towards new avenues of research in historical digital humanities is expected.

 

Your experience and profile

  • PhD in in Performance and/ or Theatre Studies; or in History with a focus on performative practices;
  • international teaching experience, preferably at various levels of university education;
  • verifiably broadly deployable and prepared to contribute to the teaching in other curricula;
  • outstanding research skills, demonstrated by publications in international refereed academic journals and academic publishers;
  • fundraising experience, e.g. acquisition of research projects through government agencies or the private sector;
  • proven experience in supervising PhD research;
  • proven leadership qualities; experience in administration, organisation and coordination of university education and research;
  • flexible, readiness to participate in interdisciplinary cooperation and multidisciplinary development (verifiably focused on collaboration with other disciplines);
  • excellent command of English. If Dutch is not the mother tongue, an active and passive command must be acquired within two years of the employment contract and the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II must be passed;
  • amenable to personal and professional development that focuses on broad deployment within the department;
  • University Teaching Qualification, or is willing to obtain this within two years after employment.

 

Our offer

 

We offer permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 18 months with a probationary period of two months. If you already have an employment contract with the UvA, we offer permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 12 months. The employment is for 38 hours per week. Preferred starting date is between 1 September 2022 and 1 February 2023.

 

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week, ranges between € 5,294 (scale 13) to € 7,079 (scale 14) dependent on relevant experience. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
