PhD candidate pig health and welfare using multiple sensor data
We are looking for an inspiring PhD candidate that is willing to invest in the topic of monitoring animal health and welfare and analytics of sensor data. This will be done in close cooperation with partners in the pig and technology sector.
The aims of this PhD project is to develop an advanced non-invasive monitoring and early warning system to detect reduced pig resilience. The PhD candidate will use novel and commonly used sensors that continuously monitor both the environment and the pigs. Algorithms will be developed that derive meaningful information on pig resilience from especially the combination of multiple sensor data.

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will receive a fully funded PhD position and you will be offered a course program tailored to your needs and the research team.The gross salary for the first year is € 2.443,- per month rising to € 3.122,- in the fourth year in according to the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale P). This is based on a full-time working week of 38 hours. We offer a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended for the duration of the project if you perform well.

The Department Animal Health and Welfare is an enthusiastic team of about 40 employees working on innovation, research and knowledge exchange. Many research challenges have an interdisciplinary character and concern major themes like reduction of antibiotic usages, one health, animal welfare, transport, responsible livestock farming and animal health. The department works on welfare and health of cattle, swine, poultry and fish, and on smart livestock farming with sensor technology and big data analysis.
Wageningen Livestock Research develops knowledge for a sustainable and profitable livestock sector, translates this into practice-oriented solutions and innovations, and ensures that this knowledge is disseminated. Together with our clients, and on the basis of practical experience, we integrate our scientific know-how in the areas of livestock systems and of the nutrition, genetics, welfare and environmental impact of farm animals to produce livestock concepts for the 21st century.
