PHD POSITION: MOBILE EEG HYPERSCANNING RESEARCH ON COOPERATION IN ADOLESCENCE

Are you looking for a challenging PhD project, which combines both technical and societal aspects?

We offer a full-time PhD position involving mobile electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate brain-to-brain synchronization during cooperation in adolescents, at the Department of Clinical, Neuro- and Developmental Psychology, VU University Amsterdam.

Location: AMSTERDAM
FTE: 0.8 - 1

JOB DESCRIPTION

A major limitation of neurocognitive research on social behavior is that the experiments are often unnatural, under highly controlled conditions, and often in isolated participants. This limits the ecological validity and thus the translatability of such research into everyday life, such as collaboration at school. However, recent developments make it possible to conduct more naturalistic research, thanks to mobile EEG techniques.

This PhD project aims to develop mobile EEG paradigms to investigate the neural correlates of cooperation in adolescents and young adults. You will use the so-called hyperscanning method, in which brain activity of two or more participants is recorded simultaneously while they interact. A special focus will be on brain-to-brain synchronization, and manipulations of social closeness and mindset. You will take a step-by-step approach, starting in a laboratory setting, followed by more naturalistic environments (e.g. school).

As a PhD candidate, you will work in close cooperation with the Social Educational Neuroscience Amsterdam (SENSA) team. Within the SENSA team, you will be part of a multidisciplinary group, including senior and more junior faculty members. Your project will be supervised by Dr. Tieme Janssen, Prof. Dr. Nienke van Atteveldt and Dr. Jellie Sierksma. More information on SENSA can be found here: www.socialeducationalneuroscience.com

Your main tasks and responsibilities include:
  • Responsibility for all aspects of the data collection, including programming of the tasks and analyses, recruitment and participant testing
  • Optimizing the EEG hyperscanning setup and analysis of EEG and behavioral data (e.g. questionnaires and collaboration tasks)
  • Manuscript preparation
  • Presentation of results at national and international conferences

REQUIREMENTS

  • A completed (research) MSc degree in the field of (neuro)psychology, cognitive neuroscience, social psychology or developmental psychology.
  • Interest in social development and portable EEG
  • Experience with EEG or another neuroimaging technique is an advantage
  • Affinity with programming and technical problem solving
  • Good knowledge of statistical data analysis
  • Strong analytical and writing skills
  • Good command of English and Dutch (or willingness to learn Dutch)
  • Affinity to work with adolescents, students and teachers
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
