PhD Scholarship (3 years, full time) in Social Data Science

 


We are looking for a PhD candidate in the area of Social Data Science, broadly defined. The PhD project should deal with important problems and phenomena related to social (data) science (e.g., algorithmic fairness, challenges of digitalization, computational hermeneutics, machine behavior, misinformation). The PhD candidate is expected to address research questions using methods from computational/data science such as computational text analysis, machine learning, netnography, or network analysis.

Applicants can have a background either in a social science discipline (e.g., anthropology, economics, sociology, political science, psychology) or in (social) data science. We are looking for the most talented candidates that ideally bring some knowledge and experience in either one of the content areas, or the methods, or both.

The preferred starting date is 01.08.2022, but an earlier or later starting date might also be possible.

What do we offer?
The PhD scholarship will be part of a joint research initiative by the Copenhagen Center for Social Data Science (SODAS, https://sodas.ku.dk/), University of Copenhagen/Denmark, and the Center for Data, Culture & Society (https://www.cdcs.ed.ac.uk/), University of Edinburgh/UK. Both institutions offer a lively research environment and host a number of researchers who have expertise in various social science areas and computational/data science methods.

We offer a competitive, fully funded PhD position for 3 years. The PhD candidate will be based in Copenhagen, with joint supervisors from both universities. It is expected that the PhD candidate spends one year during the PhD period at the University of Edinburgh.

The PhD position
The offered PhD position will be part of the Copenhagen Center for Social Data Science (SODAS). The PhD positions will be awarded as a 5+3.

The 5+3 PhD study programme
In order to be eligible for a scholarship in the 5+3 PhD study programme the applicant must have completed a two year MSc degree programme, or have earned 120 ECTS credits at an equivalent academic level before starting their employment. Applicants should check the study programmes for more detailed descriptions of the entry requirements. PhD students are paid a salary in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The PhD student has a work obligation of up to 840 hours over the 3 year period of time without additional pay. The work obligation can include for instance teaching.
