Uppsala University hereby announces a position as postdoctoral associate, conducting research related to the project Alien Structure: Language and Reality, with principal investigator Matti Eklund. The project is financed by Vetenskapsrådet (Swedish Research Council). The theme of the project is the possibility of radically different languages and the possibility that such languages might represent reality as well as or better than familiar languages do. While the project is mainly a project within philosophy of language and metaphysics, it also has connections to philosophy of science, philosophy of logic, philosophy of mind, and history of analytic philosophy. More information about the research project can be found at https://www.filosofi.uu.se/research/research-projects/alien-structure.

Duties
The postdoctoral associate is mainly supposed to be engaged in research and to take care of certain administrative duties associated with the project. However, some teaching and supervision of students (up to 20% of full time) will also be involved. The position involves regular presence at the department.

Requirements
For eligibility a PhD in Philosophy or qualifications deemed equivalent is necessary. The applicant needs to have the degree in hand by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The end point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. In special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. Such circumstances can include sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Special weight will be attached to the applicant’s research expertise (as well as fit with the overall research project), but pedagogical expertise and administrative skills will also be taken into consideration. In the evaluation of research expertise the most important factor is quality.

  • One or more writing samples. If several writing samples are included, the applicant should state which writing sample is to be considered primary.
  • A project description (of at most 5 pages) describing the research the applicant would do as a postdoctoral associate.

Candidates should make sure to, either in the cover letter or the project description, describe the relevance of their proposed research to the overall research project Alien Structure: Language and Reality.
