Postdoc in the macroecology of threats to biodiversity at Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc for a 1½ year (18 month) position to commence 1 June 2022 or as soon as possible after.
The position will be based at the Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate (CMEC) at the Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen. Information on the department can be found at: www.macroecology.ku.dk and www.globe.ku.dk.

Our group and research
You will be part of a research-team focused on understanding global patterns of anthropogenic threats to biodiversity and how conservation interventions can help to curb these. We are highly interdisciplinary; building on ecology and the social sciences to reconcile biodiversity conservation with efforts to sustain the livelihoods of people living in and around nature. We emphasize teamwork and collaborations both inside CMEC and with a global network of close collaborators. We strive to maintain a supportive and inclusive group where the experiences and skills of everyone help to build a productive, synergetic, and friendly culture and working environment.

CMEC is a center of excellence with a cross-disciplinary research program. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment addressing fundamental questions on the origin, maintenance, conservation, and future of life and biological diversity on Earth. The 40+ researchers at CMEC currently represent 14 different nationalities and the working language is English. The center juxtaposes faculty staff scientists from the fields of macroecology, historical biogeography, conservation science, oceanography, evolutionary biology, community ecology, population biology, climate change research, and environmental economics.

Your job
The position is part of a larger grant led by Assistant professor Jonas Geldmann and funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark’s ‘Sapere Aude’ program exploring global patterns of threat to biodiversity; to gain a deeper understanding of what drives these patterns as well as how they relate to conservation interventions. We focus on using the IUCN Red List and other large-scale global datasets to map the ‘likelihood of impact’ of threats to biodiversity (See Harfoot et al. 2021 Nature Ecology and Evolution: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41559-021-01542-9). Your tasks will be to explore questions related to the socio-economic, biological, and geological factors that help to explain the geographical patterns of threats and potentially how threats interact, using geo-spatial and statistical modelling. You will have the opportunity to shape your own research within the scope of the grant. Based on this, you will be expected to lead the development of one or more papers for publication in international peer-reviewed journals. You will also have the opportunity to gain experience in in teaching and supervise MSc and BSc student thesis projects.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

  • You have a PhD in conservation science, ecology, biology, or other environmental sciences. Candidates from computer science, physics and mathematics will also be considered if they have a proven track-record of publishing within conservation science.
  • You have published first-author papers in international peer-reviewed journals
  • You are highly experienced in statistical analysis (for example Mixed-Effects models and/or process-based models).
  • You know a programming language e.g. R, Julia, and/or Python.
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Excellent English skills written and spoken.

Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience in teaching and supervising undergraduate and MSc students
  • Experience conducting geo-spatial analyses in R (or other programming languages)
  • Experience with the IUCN Red List and/or other global data sources related to conservation science (e.g., the Living Planet Database, The World Database on Protected Areas)
