Postdoc position at Arctic Research Centre

Arctic Research Centre (ARC) invites applications for a 2,5-year postdoctoral fellowship from 1 June 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About ARC

ARC is an interdisciplinary research centre at Aarhus University (see arctic.au.dk). ARC focus on the melting cryosphere and it’s feedback on the climate system and effects on ecosystems and societies. This involves research, education, and collaboration with business and industry as well as consultancy services to national and international government agencies and institutions, local communities and the general public. ARC looks at how a melting Arctic will affect connected global processes and social systems. Joint field campaigns constitute a focal point in the work of ARC and an effective means to unite and integrate the different academic fields involved, sparking interdisciplinary collaboration and synergy.
ARC is part of the Arctic Science Partnership (see asp-net.org). ARC seeks to answer seven key questions:
  1. How does climate change impact the Arctic cryosphere and what are the implications for the cryosphere’s interactions with land, ocean and atmosphere?
  2. What controls the marine and atmospheric transport of contaminantsto the Arctic?
  3. How can proxies of palaeoclimate/ecology inform us of changes in ocean current, wind systems, precipitation, future Arctic climates and their ecological consequences?
  4. What are the consequences of these drivers (1-2) for i) ecosystem productionand function? and ii) chemical contaminants affecting ecosystems and human exposure?
  5. What are the impacts of the transition and environmental changes on the Arctic population’s lifestyle and changes in disease patterns?
  6. What will be the combined effects of natural and anthropogenic forcing on ecosystems and their services?
  7. How can technology developments and implementation help us to connect scientific data needs with operational capability in the Arctic?
  8. What are the feedbacks between the Arctic and Earth climate system?

Research area and project description

We advertise a postdoc position within the natural science themes, i.e., questions 1 and; 7-8 above, wishing to select a young scientist with a background in biogeochemistry who will contribute with a process oriented approach to the study of air-sea (ice) exchange of climate change drivers focusing on the carbon cycle and climate feedbacks in air-sea system.

The postdoc will be active member of an interdisciplinary team conducting field campaigns in East Greenland in relation to the Greenland Integrated Observing System (GIOS, see gios.org) where near real time data from the field is being transmitted over satellite. The postdoc will work together with a team of scientists, engineers and technical personal to establish the air-sea flux observatories, data processing and publishing data from the infrastructure.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have obtained a PhD degree or have submitted their PhD thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline in the field of chemistry, geoscience or related disciplines. The candidate is expected to have experience from field work, data processing and have technical insight. Good team-working and communication skills are necessary.

The place of work is

Arctic Research Centre, Dept. of Biology, Aarhus University, Building 1130-1134-1135, Ole Worms Allé 8, DK-8000 Aarhus C.

This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference

If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline. Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
