The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment.

We address important societal issues such as antibiotic resistance, cancer, brain diseases, environmental problems and climate change. In this way, we contribute to achieving the UN's global goals for sustainable development in the areas of good health and well-being, sustainable energy for all, sustainable cities and communities, and combating climate change.

The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education, and contributes strongly to the University of Gothenburg's top ranking in life science.

The department is responsible for postgraduate education in the subject area Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry, biophysics, biology and educational science. In addition, the department hosts educational programs in molecular biology, genomics and systems biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry, as well as prescription education. The department collaborates with various societal actors such as schools, business and authorities. The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology has around 200 employees. We are located in central premises both on Campus Johanneberg and on Campus Medicinareberget in Gothenburg.

We seek someone to contribute to a strong research program and add value to the on-going research in the Ewing laboratory at the University of Gothenburg. The topics of the work will be chemical measurements with nano electrodes to measure neurotransmitters in exosomes and relate this to short-term memory.

Job assignments

The job assignments mainly include planning, designing and carrying out research with electrochemistry at and in single cells to understand exocytosis, but might involve mass spectrometry imaging with both SIMS and NanoSIMS as well as STED microscopy. Target applications will be exosomes released from nerve cells and model cells containing transmitter vesicles. The goal will be to study exosome related intracellular communication to delineate the molecular underpinnings of STM initiation by use of innovative analytical methodologies.

Qualifications

A PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry is required with at two year’s experience after the PhD. We are seeking someone that has required experience with electrochemical microsensors based on advanced nanomaterials to directly achieve in-situ analysis in vivo. The project requires significant expertise in in vivo electrochemical analysis, neurochemical measurements and (micro)electrode design based on nanomaterials. As this project will have an element of working with Parkinson’s disease cells, experience in this area is desired.

Employment

The employment is a time-limited position for two years on fulltime (100%) placed at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology in Gothenburg, Sweden. Starting in June 2022.
