Two postdoc positions in contemporary art studies

The Department of Art History, Aesthetics & Culture and Museology within the School of Communication and Culture at Aarhus University invites applications for two postdoctoral positions affiliated with the research project Artistic Practice under Contemporary Conditions. These positions have been made possible by a Novo Nordisk Foundation Investigator Grant to Associate Professor Jacob Lund.

The postdoc positions are full-time, two-year fixed-term positions, and begin on 1 September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The School of Communication and Culture is committed to diversity and encourages all qualified applicants to apply regardless of their personal background.

Project

The project Artistic Practice under Contemporary Conditions is a theoretical and analytical investigation of the relationship between artistic practice and the socio-political context in which it takes place. It is guided by the hypotheses that this relationship has undergone substantial changes during an art historical shift from modern art to contemporary art, and that the discipline of art history needs to revise traditional notions of its historicity, categories of work and artistic autonomy in order to catch up with the phenomenon of contemporary art, which often escapes these notions. Rather than defining what contemporary art is, the purpose is to explore how contemporary artistic practices create meaning in relation to the non-artistic societal reality in and on which they operate. The focus is on exploring and describing how the very diverse practices and works we collect under the name of “contemporary art” function as art, and on what qualifies them as artistic. The working language of the project is English. Read an extended description of the project here.

Postdoc profiles

We are looking for applicants to deliver individual postdoc projects under the auspices of the overall project while contributing to the collective task of developing insights into contemporary artistic practices. Proposed projects should address one of the following:

The concept of knowledge in relation to artistic practice

The overall project aims to develop analytical approaches that are able to think with contemporary art. This endeavour is connected to an increased focus on the knowledge that artistic practices are capable of generating, for instance through archival and documentary work. Knowledge, along with research, has become a central area of competence within contemporary art that seemingly overshadows traditional aesthetic categories like beauty, style and genre, which have previously organised and filtered the production and understanding of art (cf. Tom Holert). To a much larger extent than before, contemporary art claims an active epistemic function and takes an active part in determining what can be understood as knowledge; which forms it can take; whom and what this knowledge is made for; and under which conditions.

This postdoc will carry out a project in relation to research questions such as: How is knowledge generated through artistic practice? Which kind of knowledge? How does it differ from traditional scientific knowledge? How can it challenge and/or cooperate with existing knowledge and ways of generating knowledge? How is it made communicable? What forms, infrastructures and relations does it enter into or form part of?

Artistic practice in a digitalised lifeworld

Synchronously with the emergence of contemporary art, large parts of our existence have been revolutionised due to developments in communication technologies. These technologies intervene in practically all aspects of our everyday lives, have been a decisive factor in producing a global contemporaneity in which all parts of the globe in principle are interconnected, and help to constitute what we understand by presence and the present. How do artistic practices not only employ digital technologies but explore what it means to think, see and sense through the digital?
This postdoc project, which may be based on artistic or curatorial practice, will focus on research questions such as: How do artistic practices generate reflexive transformations (cf. Juliane Rebentisch) of the digitalisation of our everyday lives? How are the consequences of digitalisation and the internet for the ways in which we perceive and experience the world articulated artistically? Which media and technological questions, aspects and strategies are involved in aesthetic reflexive transformations of a digitalised lifeworld and our changed relation to perception, history, language and social relations? What does the work of art do when, for instance, online platforms not only function as documentation or representation but as the place where the work of art appears and meets its recipients and participants, as the place of its exhibition?

The successful applicants will be expected to conduct new, original research in the areas defined above; to publish in relevant journals, academic books and non-academic publications on contemporary artistic practices; to help coordinate the project activities, including guest seminars and researcher visits, and possible curatorial projects; to participate in project meetings and joint events; to work collaboratively with the principal investigator (PI) and other team members; and to actively develop the research area including identifying and maintaining contact with academic and non-academic partners.

The Project PI, Associate Professor Jacob Lund, will coordinate the research and mentor the research projects in order to support the career development of the postdocs.

Teaching and supervision

The postdoc positions in this project are primarily research based but will also involve a small amount of teaching and supervision. To that end, the successful applicants will be expected to take part in the department’s teaching and supervision activities and to teach and supervise at BA and MA level.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD degree or must document equivalent qualifications in a relevant field (art history, aesthetics, curatorial studies, media, visual studies or artistic practice) related to issues of contemporary artistic practice. Applicants must be able to document, relevant to the position:

  • an internationally oriented research profile within critical humanities as documented by a PhD dissertation and/or research publications
  • experience of the self-directed management of research projects

Furthermore, it will be considered an advantage if applicants can document

  • relevant teaching experience at university level
  • experience of participation in national and international research networks
  • time spent abroad working at one or more internationally recognised research institutions

Finally, applicants are asked to provide a proposal for research to be undertaken within the stated framework of the research project (max. 7,200 characters incl. spaces). The quality and topicality of the proposal will be a decisive criterion in the assessment of the applications.

Please note that applications that do not include uploaded publications (maximum five) will not be considered.

Although the Aarhus University application system includes an option to upload letters of recommendation, please do not include letters of recommendation or references with the application. Applicants who are invited to an interview may be asked to provide references.
