Postdoc position on Image Captioning

 We are seeking to hire a highly motivated, driven, and talented postdoc for a period of 15 months, for 0.8 FTE. In this project, you will be using deep learning methods for image captioning using visual and non-visual knowledge. The postdoc position is part of ROCAP project, a Proof-of-Concept grant from the European Research Council (ERC) to Prof Yoad Winter, and builds on the results of the ROCKY ERC Advanced project 

. As such, the focus will be on demonstrating the usability of the ROCKY methods of image captioning to applicable domains.
The project will be carried out at the Institute for Language Sciences (formerly Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS) at Utrecht University, the Netherlands.
 
Tasks for the postdoc are:

  • collaboration with team members and external partners in developing a state-of-the-art image captioning system based on the results of the ROCKY project;
  • regular presentation of intermediate research results at workshops and conferences;
  • publication of peer-reviewed articles in established international journals;
  • co-organization of project workshops and conferences.

Qualifications

General requirements;

  • a PhD degree in computational linguistics in hand by the starting date;
  • demonstrable knowledge in at least one of the following areas: deep learning, machine learning, natural language processing. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in image-captioning or vision-language models;
  • high proficiency in academic English;
  • ability to meet deadlines;
  • readiness to learn new research methods;
  • good programming skills, especially Python and PyTorch;
  • ability to work both as an independent researcher and as a team member in an interdisciplinary team;
  • strong organizational, social and communication skills.

Offer

The position is offered at 0.8 FTE, starting 1 March 2023, for a period of 15 months. In addition, teaching for 0.2 FTE may be arranged, depending on qualifications of the candidate and needs of the department.

The minimum gross salary is €3,974 and the maximum gross salary is €3,974 (scale 11.0 of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities) per month, at a full-time employment.
