The Department of History of the University of Basel invites applications for a 60% postdoctoral assistant position in Eastern European history / modern and contemporary history, to be filled as of February 1st, 2025.
Your position
The independent and cross-professorial academic assistant position (postdoc) is centered at the interface between the history of Eastern Europe and modern and contemporary history. Your responsibilities will include:
- own academic research (habilitation or second book),
- academic teaching assignment (2 weekly hours per semester) as part of the degrees offered by the Department of History and the interdisciplinary Eastern European profile area,
- participation in academic self-administration and support in the organizational tasks of the department.
Your profile
We are looking for a committed scholar with an excellent doctorate in Eastern European history or modern and contemporary history. We expect applications from independent and proactive scholars with
- innovative research projects focusing on a topic of Eastern European history of the 19th to 21st century with transnational references,
- good language skills (German, English and at least one Eastern European language), and
- interest in current research debates and related cultural and historical issues.

The Department of History consists of around 120 staff members and eight professors who research and teach in a context covering different periods, with diverse interdisciplinary collaborations and international networks. Many of our activities are based on a common interest in European history from a global perspective.
The position is initially limited to two years with an option to extend for a maxiumum period of 6 years. The conditions of employment follow the guidelines of the University of Basel.
