Description of the workplace
The Proteostasis in Stem Cells lab is located at Division of Molecular Medicine and Gene Therapy at BMC A12 and seeking for a curious and driven PhD candidate with a background in stem cells and molecular biology. The lab, led by Associate Professor Agathees Subramaniam, employs a combination of cell biology and biochemical assays to uncover the role of ubiquitin ligases in hematopoietic stem cells and leukemia development. The group currently consists of a postdoc, two research assistants, and two Master’s students. The research team closely collaborates with Lund University hospital and Swedish national infrastructures such as BioMS and CBCS.

The group is international, and we encourage collaboration and open communication. As a workplace we safeguard a positive work environment with respect and consideration in our relations with one another.

What we offer
Lund University is a public authority, which means that you will have special benefits, generous annual leave and an advantageous occupational pension. We also have a flexitime agreement that creates good conditions for work/life balance. Read more on the University’s website about being a Lund University employee, Work at Lund University

Work duties and areas of responsibility
Project: Ubiquitin ligases tightly control the abundance of their target proteins to regulate key cellular processes such as cell cycle, differentiation and DNA damage response. In this project we aim to uncover the functional role of ubiquitin ligases in hematopoietic stem cells and how the perturbations in this process can lead to leukemia development. The successful candidate will work in primary hematopoietic stem cells and will employ a set of CRISPR and proteomics assays. Work responsibilities include primary cell culture, FACS, cell sorting, molecular biology assays such as CRISPR, cloning and NGS. The candidate is expected to be well organized, work independently and should have the ability to coordinate the project with other lab members and collaborators. Other responsibilities include attending seminars and meetings at the division, writing manuscripts and training students at the Lab.

Qualifications
The requirements for the position are:

  • A Master’s degree in Biomedicine or Molecular biology or a related discipline
  • Documented experience in CRISPR, lentiviral vectors, FACS, cell sorting,
  • Experience with the purification and in vitro culture of primary hematopoietic stem cells and differentiation assays
  • A strong theoretical background in ubiquitin-proteasome system and haematopoiesis
  • Proficiency in English, strong communication and presentation skills

Additional qualifications for the position are:

  • Training/experience with confocal microscopy is a plus
  • Previous experience of research in similar projects

Research expertise and soft skills are the foremost criteria for employment. The evaluation of applicants will take account of their research profile, experience and knowledge.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.

Type of employment
The employment is on full-time and limited to four years, according to HF chapter 5 § 7, with start date 2025-01-01 or according to agreement.
As a doctoral student at Lund University, you are both admitted as a student and employed.

The application is also to include a CV  and any other documents to which you wish to draw attention (copies of degree certificates, grade transcripts, details of referees, letters of recommendation, etc.)

The Faculty of Medicine is a part of Lund University, and is responsible for education and research within medicine and healthcare. Our academic programs are closely linked with the healthcare system and are firmly anchored in the faculty’s strong research tradition. Our research spans a broad field within experimental preclinical research, near-patient clinical research and health sciences research. The Faculty of Medicine, with its 1,800 employees and 2,700 students in Lund and Malmö, is a knowledge-intensive meeting place for students, teachers and researchers from all over the world.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine is one of six departments at Lund University’s Faculty of Medicine. We conduct leading research, both broad and specialised, within the field of laboratory medicine, focusing on the onset of disease and how we can improve diagnostics and treatment for patients. Some of our strongest areas with world-class research deal with cancer, genetics and blood.
