The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Institute of Clinical Sciences is one of six Institutes within Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. We conduct research and education that puts people’s health and quality of life in focus. We represent 16 different research areas and are divided into four sections.
The Department of Biomaterials has an internationally leading position in the field of implants osseointegration and guided bone regeneration (GBR). Novel, sustainable clinical implant solutions require a fundamental knowledge of the mechanisms which determine successful implant-tissue interfaces and functional performance.
We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified researcher to join our research team at The Institute of Clinical Sciences, Department of Biomaterials. The successful candidate will contribute to innovative studies in tissue response, molecular biology and advanced material coatings related to implantology. This position offers the opportunity to engage in in vivo and in vitro research projects, with a focus on advancing knowledge in implant tissue engineering, surface modifications and microbiological responses.
The project is part of a global network where, among other things, close collaboration takes place with the University of Porto Alegre, Brazil and Aalborg University in Denmark. Within the framework of the VINNOVA project, there is also collaboration with Med Tech Industri in the region (Neoss AB) as well as clinical projects in collaboration with the Västra Götaland Region. The research area is currently in an active phase and has several ongoing projects and we see a need for increased resources for laboratory activities and completion of data for a number of projects.
Duties
The present position involves research in several projects focused on novel materials for GBR and modified implant surfaces on dental implants for improved osseointegration. The projects involve tasks such as:
- Conduct high-quality research on implant dentistry, focusing on guided tissue regeneration and guided bone regeneration, surface modifications, and biomaterials.
- Design and execute in vivo studies involving animal models (rabbits, rats), including sample processing and analysis using techniques like MicroCT, confocal microscopy, and histology.
- Perform in vitro studies, including qRT-PCR, immunoassays, Western blotting and other molecular biology techniques.
- Collaborate in interdisciplinary teams, providing expertise in image analysis using tools like ImageJ, Photoshop, GraphPad Prism and Sigmaplot.
- Manage projects, draft and submit research papers for publication in high-impact journals, and present findings at international conferences.
Qualifications
The applicant must have a PhD degree in Dentistry or a related field (e.g., oral biology, biomedical sciences). Demonstrated expertise in dental implant research, with specific experience in biomaterials and surface modifications. Proficiency in molecular biology techniques and histological evaluations. Strong background in conducting preclinical animal studies, and proficiency in relevant software for data analysis, imaging, and statistics. Furthermore, it is expected that applicants can work both independently and, in a group, together with the research team and have good knowledge of both written and spoken English.
When evaluating the applicants, particular emphasis will be put on research skills in the relevant research field. Accuracy and the abilities to cooperate and to take own initiatives are also important qualities.
Employment
The employment is limited (temporary) for 6 months, 100 % of full-time and is placed at the department of Biomaterials at the Institute of Clinical Sciences. Starting date: As agreed
