About the opportunity
We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Chemical Biology to undertake research in chemical biology and protein engineering, studying enzyme evolution and antibiotic biosynthesis. Reporting to Professor Peter Rutledge and A/Prof Michael Kertesz, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team spanning synthetic and molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and synthetic chemistry in the School of Chemistry and the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney.
As a senior member of the research group, you will also be expected to help with the day-to-day supervision of graduate and undergraduate research students, including administrative tasks relating to project organisation, safety matters and general lab management. You will be expected to prepare papers for publication in refereed journals and to present research findings at international conferences.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- participate in a research program in chemical biology and protein engineering
- prepare results and data for publication, assist with paper writing and publishing original work
- contribute to the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the research context
- develop your research profile through presenting at conferences and seminars.

About you

- a PhD (or near completion) in chemical biology, biochemistry, synthetic biology, or a closely related discipline
- experience in recombinant protein expression and purification, designing and cloning new protein constructs, and bioinformatics techniques
- demonstrated ability to conduct research independently under limited supervision
- proven research excellence in this area of chemical biology
- experience in research record keeping, disseminating research findings at group meetings and conferences, and writing up results for publication
- the ability and a willingness to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to contribute to long-term research goals
- excellent written and oral communication skills, with experience interacting with a variety of researchers and stakeholders
- strong organisational and problem-solving skills with proven capacity to pay attention to detail
- a track record of publishing their research.
