About the opportunity

The Image X Institute is a centre for innovation in radiation therapy and medical imaging technologies. We create, share and apply scientific knowledge to improve health by building new technology for cancer imaging and targeted radiation therapy. We engage with industry, hospitals, international collaborators and universities to forge relationships that help take our projects from lab bench to patient bedside. Image X is a part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney.

Since our inception 160 years ago, the University of Sydney has led to improve the world around us. We believe in education for all and that effective leadership makes lives better. These same values are reflected in our approach to diversity and inclusion and underpin our long-term strategy for growth. We are Australia’s first university and have an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. Across our campuses, we employ over 8,100 academic and non-academic staff who support over 73,000 students.

We are undergoing significant transformative change which brings opportunity for innovation, progressive thinking, breaking with convention, challenging the status quo, and improving the world around us.

At the Image X Institute, our research portfolio spans development of new treatment ideas, clinical trials, preclinical imaging, device development, MRI-Physics, radiation therapy physics, and computational physics. We engage with industry, hospitals, international collaborators and universities to forge relationships that help take our projects from lab bench to patient bedside. Here, you will have the opportunity to participate in a wide ranging and multi-disciplinary research program in a role funded by Medical Research Future Fund.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate (level A/B) to work on a research project harnessing the power of artificial-intelligence (AI) to improve radiation therapy treatment for cancer patients.

In this project you will build new targeting technologies based on AI that solve the challenges of tumour motion during radiation therapy. The role is based at the Image X Institute and will be led by Prof Paul Keall.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Advance the science and clinical practice of cancer imaging and targeted radiation therapy
  • create, develop, experimentally and clinically implement mechanistic and AI based algorithms
  • support the acquisition and analysis of clinical data, and an imaging, software and equipment infrastructure

About you

  • An awarded or near completed Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (e.g., Medical Physics, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or Engineering)
  • demonstrated experience or knowledge one or more of the following:
    • software and mathematical algorithm development, especially in artificial intelligence
    • working with X-ray equipment, linear accelerators, MRI scanners, PET, or other scientific/medical devices
    • working with a variety of experts in different fields (e.g., radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, physicists, engineers, clinicians etc).
  • a publication track record that places emphasis on quality publications and/or experience with clinical trial protocol development.
  • demonstrated scientific creativity and innovation/discovery
  • outstanding interpersonal and communication skills in a team environment.
