The Department of Chemistry – Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 300 million SEK. At the department’s six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master’s programs. More information is available on our website: (https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom/?languageId=1).

WISE

This recruitment is linked to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wisematerials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest investment in materials science in Sweden ever and will include major investments at Sweden’s leading universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science. Read more: https://wise-materials.org. Young researchers recruited to the WISE program will be part of the WISE Research School, an ambitious nationwide program with seminars, courses, research visits and other activities to promote a strong multidisciplinary and international network between doctoral students, postdocs, researchers and industry. The goal of WISE is to create the conditions for a sustainable society through research into new environmentally friendly materials and production methods, a partial goal is to develop methods for the production of new materials to combat pollution and toxic emissions.

Duties

The doctoral student’s main task is their doctoral education. This includes research on hybrid systems of quantum dots with molecular catalysts for CO2 reduction, studied with time-resolved laser spectroscopy on time scales of femtoseconds and up. The doctoral student will have the opportunity to investigate the dynamics of the charge carriers and the catalytic mechanisms, and how they can be controlled with chemical modifications. The research work is carried out both independently and in collaboration with others. In addition, doctoral courses and interaction with other participants within the WISE program are included. Department duties such as undergraduate teaching may comprise the equivalent of a maximum of 20% of full time.

Requirements
The candidate must have:

  • been awarded a second-cycle qualification in chemistry, physics or a corresponding subject, with direction physical chemistry, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits (including at least 90 credits in chemistry and physics), or
  • acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English.

The applicant must be strongly motivated for the task and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a group.Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Additional qualifications

Experience of time-resolved laser spectroscopy is a merit.
