Background
This position is for a medically qualified doctor in core or speciality training to work as a clinical research fellow within the Translational Brain Science research group. The post is funded for up to three years and would enable registration for a PhD at the University of Birmingham (subject to satisfactory progress). The candidate would need to fund their own PhD fees as needed.
This position is based at the Translational Brain Science research group but is collaborative across the College of Medicine and Health and other colleges as part of a vibrant clinical community, focused on delivering innovative solutions to patient care.
This post is part of the mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) predict portfolio which focuses on identifying accurate, reproducible biomarkers in mTBI that will predict the most common and disabling consequences of mTBI: primarily persistent post-traumatic headache, as well as cognitive dysfunction, depression, PTSD, dizziness and return to work. This will be achieved through a harmonised program of detailed clinical phenotyping of acute mTBI patients coupled with state-of-the-art multimodal biomarker evaluation (brain imaging, fluid biomarkers, steroid hormones, visual, sleep, cognitive, vestibular, cerebral physiology, and EEG). A PhD project would be designed amongst these themes whilst also facilitating delivery of the mTBI Predict study.
As required, the candidate will work with the clinical trials unit, basic and translational scientists, data scientists, statisticians, clinicians, nurses and patients, being trained and supported to deliver the research.
The candidate will have a bespoke supervisory group built around them, to support their academic work and provide mentorship not only for this studentship and beyond in their career.
