As an applicant, you must develop a preliminary project outline for a doctoral project within the research theme that accounts for the problem statement, relevance, theoretical and methodological approach. The project outline, which is central to competence assessment, must clearly connect to group’s research agenda and contain proposals for experiment design and a cost plan. During the first three months of the employment period, the project proposal and progress plan will be further developed in cooperation with your supervisors and completed for the final plan for the PhD-project. A project proposal template can be found here.
Qualification requirements
We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background with a five-year master’s degree in psychology, educational science, pedagogy, special education, or equivalent education that provides grounds for conducting researcher training, preferably of recent date. Experience and/or formal education within neuropsychology is desirable.
If your grade on your master’s thesis and weighted average grade on your master’s studies both separately correspond to B or better, you are whom we are looking for. If you have an education from an institution with another grading scale than A-F, we ask you to attach a confirmed conversion scale showing how grades can be compared with the Norwegian A-F scale. You can use these conversion scales to calculate your points for admission.
Emphasis is also placed on your:
- are interested in studying questions related to neuropsychological processes in children and youth related to different physical learning environments
- are motivated and have potential for research within this field
- have academic and personal prerequisites to complete doctoral training within the employment period
- can work independently as well as collaboratively; being innovative and creative
- are structured and have high working capacity
- have good English skills, both written and spoken, and preferably also know a Scandinavian language

The Center for Learning Environment and Behavioral Research in Education is a nationwide center and one of eleven national centers in education. The Center assists national education authorities in the process of realizing the national education policy. It additionally works with self-initiated assignments within research and development competence development for kindergartens and schools, as well as teaching an counseling within the university. The Center’s vision is to be a national driving force in the promotion of safe and good learning environments in kindergartens and schools. The Center for Learning Environment has two departments – in Stavanger and in Porsgrunn; with 96 employees affiliated to the center.
The Faculty of Arts and Education is the region’s most important institution for educating teachers for kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, upper secondary schools and higher education. The Faculty also provides basic education in sport, languages, religion and history, as well as eight Master’s programmes and two doctoral programmes.
The Faculty has three national centres: The National Centre for Reading Education and Research (the Reading Centre), the National Centre for Learning Environment and Behavioural Research (The Learning Environment Centre) and the Knowledge Centre for Education (KSU), as well as the Filiorum Centre for Early Childhood Research.
