Position as PhD Research Fellow in Algebra, Geometry and Topology is available at the Department of Mathematics.
The fellowship period is 3 years. A fourth year may be considered with a workload of 25 % that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.
Starting date no later than October 1, 2025.
No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.
We are looking for a talented PhD student to be affiliated with the section Algebra, Geometry and Topology. This section includes two vibrant research groups, Algebra and Algebraic Geometry and Geometry and Topology. The research within these groups includes a variety of research fields, including birational geometry, classical algebraic geometry, combinatorics, derived categories, enumerative geometry, low-dimensional topology, real algebraic geometry, and tropical geometry.
Preference will be given to candidates with research interests and background well aligned with the activity of the two groups. Applicants should describe this alignment in the application.

Qualification requirements

- Master’s degree or equivalent in a topic related to algebra, algebraic geometry or topology
- Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
Candidates without a master’s degree have until 30 June 2025 to complete the final exam.
Desired qualifications:
- Research experience in algebra, algebraic geometry or low-dimensional topology (e.g., in the form of a master’s thesis)
- Research interests that are related to the members of Section 5 (such as the research topics mentioned above)
