Position as PhD Research Fellow in Algebraic Topology is available at the Department of Mathematics.
The fellowship period is 3 years. A fourth year may be considered with a workload of 25 % that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.
Starting date no later than October 1, 2025.
No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.
The PhD position will be under the supervision of Achim Krause in the Algebra, Topology and Geometry section of the Department of Mathematics. The topology group currently consists of Kim Frøyshov, Achim Krause and John Rognes, as well as one PhD student. The thesis project is somewhat flexible and will be decided together with the supervisor, but should be in the area of algebraic K-theory and stable homotopy theory. Applicants are encouraged to reach out to Achim Krause for a discussion of possible topics.

Qualification requirements

- Master’s degree or equivalent in Mathematics, with a focus on geometry and topology
- Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
Candidates without a master’s degree have until 30 June 2025 to complete the final exam.
Desired qualifications:
- A strong background in algebraic topology
- Previous experience in any of the following is not strictly necessary, but considered favorably: Stable homotopy theory, higher category theory, algebraic K-theory, algebraic geometry
- Research experience (for instance in form of a Master’s thesis in algebraic topology)
Personal skills:

- A good work ethic
- Active participation in the mathematical environment at UiO is expected
Grade requirements:
- the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
- the average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
- the Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
