We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!
The Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences, BKV, is one of the university’s largest departments, with operations mainly in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Our aim is to engage in medical and biomedical education and research of high international standing. At undergraduate level the department is responsible for most of the medical program, the speech and language pathology program and the biomedical program.
We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science
Your work assignments
You will work on a project focused on the molecular regulation of normal and malignant Blood cell development. One of the most prominent hallmarks of leukemia is the disruption of the developmental trajectory resulting in that leukemic cells do not progress in their cellular differentiation and maturation but remain frozen at a proliferative immature stage. This PhD project aims to resolve the molecular mechanism that regulate B-lymphocyte differentiation with the long-term aim to identify the underlying cause of the developmental block in blood cell maturation observed in leukemia.
This specific project aims to resolve how the transcription of Ebf1 and Pax5 are initiated progenitor cells and how this is linked to normal and malignant B-cell development. Using one of our novel tools to link regulatory elements (enhancers) to functional genes, it will be possibly to identify putative regulatory elements in the genome. By exploring the usage of these enhancer elements in normal cells and in transformed cells carrying disruptions in the regulatory network, we hope to identify leukemia specific aspects of gene regulation that may help us understand the mechanism underlying the disrupted differentiation observed in leukemia.
Your work will mainly involve tissue culture, CAS9 mediated genetic manipulation of cells and molecular analysis. This includes state of the art RNA and DNA -seq technologies and basic analysis of the obtained data. Even though the absolute major part of the work is focused on in vitro models, you will at times work with mice.
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.
Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level Biomedicine or Laboratory Sciences with completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. Experience in tissue culture, flow cytometry, Q-PCR analysis and work with CAS9 model systems is highly valuated.
Part of the project will be completed at University of California. Therefore, a successful applicant needs extensive English skills.
As the position will involve supervision and or teaching activities, the candidate need to be sufficiently proficient in Swedish to handle these tasks.
Even though the education will be performed in the context of a research group, the position puts high demands on independence, flexibility and ability to adapt to new situations.
Your workplace
The Division of Molecular Medicine and Virology is located at the University Hospital Campus of Linköping University. The division is composed by 12 independent research groups aiming to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying medical conditions such as inflammation, infection and cancer. You will work in a research group composed of 7 scientists with different skillsets and previous research experience. The work is conducted in a modern laboratory with excellent access to state-of-the-art core facilities.
The employment
In connection with your admission to the doctoral program, your employment as a PhD student is handled. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University
The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
Starting date by agreement.
Salary and employment benefits
