About the opportunity
The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use provides a world-first synergy of leading epidemiological, prevention, early intervention, and treatment research and translation programs in substance use and mental disorders. The Matilda Centre brings together researchers in broad fields to share skills, integrate data, and harness new technologies to shed light on the nature and understanding of substance use and mental disorders as well as develop and trial innovative prevention, early intervention and treatment programs.
We seek 2x Postdoctoral Research Associates or Research Fellows to join a growing research team led by Professor Katherine Mills. The preferred candidates will work across a range of epidemiological and longitudinal studies, as well as clinical trials that aim to improve our understanding of mental health and substance use disorders and their treatment. These roles will undertake a range of academic research tasks to work towards research goals and objectives, including data analysis, literature reviews, writing up results for publication in scientific journals, and project management.

Your key responsibilities will be to:
For Level A Postdoctoral Research Associate (Research Only)
- Work closely with the team leader, researchers, chief investigators and key stakeholders to achieve project aims.
- Work independently and as part of a team to undertake activities related to the conduct of quantitative research including reviews of the scientific literature, the preparation of study protocols and related documentation, and the preparation and execution of data management and statistical analysis plans
- Independently undertake data cleaning, management and analysis, including the application of advanced statistical techniques to large epidemiological, longitudinal, clinical trial, and/or linked data sets.
- Preparation of high-quality scientific outputs including articles for publication in peer reviewed journals, reports, and presentations.
- Adhere to confidentiality and privacy requirements associated with the use sensitive data for research.
- Assist in all activities related to the conduct of the research, including in the reviewing and updating of research protocols and related documents and coordinating data between various teams.
- Assist with undertaking administrative requirements of research project management.
- Assist in building and maintaining strategic relationships with internal and external collaborators and key-stakeholders.
For Level B Research Fellow (in addition to the above)
- Work independently and as part of a team to design, coordinate, execute and implement study protocols and procedures, including execution of complex analyses in accordance with study aims.
- maintain a research profile, including preparation and publication of peer-reviewed journal articles, conference and seminar papers.
- Take an active role in the development and submission of funding applications.
- independently develop and maintain a network of academic, professional partners, internal and external stakeholders and collaborators
- engage in translational research and facilitate knowledge-sharing.
- provide low level and informal mentoring/guidance to junior staff members and researchers as required
About you
For Level A Postdoctoral Research Associate (Research Only)
- Completed or near completion of PhD in psychology, epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, behavioural or social sciences, or a relevant field
- Demonstrated experience developing and contributing to research evidence by producing original, high quality and independent research
- Sound understanding of the subject matter of substance use and mental health
- Sound understanding of the theory and methods relating to the design of one or more of the following: epidemiological, longitudinal, clinical, and/or data linkage research
- demonstrated ability to perform quantitative data analysis
- excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to liaise effectively with all levels of staff and stakeholders.
- experience in the development of academic publications or report writing
- High-level organisational and time management skills, strong attention to detail, and a proven ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
For Level B Research Fellow (in addition to the above)
- demonstrated experience conducting original research and coordinating all aspects of the research process including study design and implementation, analysis, reporting and write up of study findings
- A research profile in a similar discipline or area of expertise
- Highly developed data analysis skills and experience in methodologically rigorous analyses of epidemiological, longitudinal, clinical, and/or large-scale administrative data.
- Previous experience supervising and mentoring junior staff or researchers
