The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is mainly located with the other Departments of Chemistry and Life Sciences in the Arrhenius Laboratories for Natural Sciences, which are situated in the northern part of the University Campus at Frescati. We are approximately 270 employees, that work at the Department, and are engaged in internationally highly recognized research covering a broad range of subjects.

Main responsibilities
The work is aimed at determining how signal substances are released from neurons in the brain that control hormone secretion, the so-called neuroendocrine system. In particular, the research will focus on a group of neurons that use dopamine as one of its transmitters.
These issues will be addressed using a combination of fluorescence-based and physiological techniques, and subsequent analysis of the data collected.
Experiments will be performed on tissue collected from genetically manipulated experimental animals. Some of these animals will undergo intracranical surgery as part of the experiment. In addition, experiments will be performed on cultured preparations of neural tissue.
The investigations will also include parallel examination of tissue in fluorescence microscopes after histochemical processing to determine changes in transmitter production and verification of surgical procedures.
Participation in common group activities (such as weekly meetings with scientific presentations) and responsibility that the laboratory and its equipment is maintained in good order are also part of the employment, as well as assisting in data analysis.
Qualification requirements
Required: A university education (BSc or MSc or equivalent) in biology/biomedicine, ideally with training in neuroscience.
Proficiency in spoken and written English is required.
The l candidate should have experience of practical experimental neuroscience work.
Merits: It is a considerable advantage if this experience includes independent investigations of neurotransmitter release and electrophysiological recordings.
Priority will be given to candidates with documented experience of work with experimental animals, in particular rodents, and of genetic manipulation of neurons.
It is also an advantage to have worked hands-on with cell culture.
You are expected to have applied programming in a biomedical research context.
You are expected to take responsibility and be attracted by problem-solving, and enjoy working in a position that requires considerable flexibility and an ability to communicate and work in a collegial manner.
Your personal characteristics include a good sense of order and attention to details.
Great importance will be placed on personal suitability.
