Project description

The project aims to investigate the anatomical microstructure of neuroendocrine neuronal networks in the brain of experimental animals.

Main responsibilities

We are looking for a Postdoctoral with expertise in neuroscience. The work will be focuses on studies of the structural organization of neurons and the networks that they form, with an emphasis on the neuroendocrine system.

The research encompasses collecting tissue from experimental animals, and preparing it for different histochemical analyses. The tissue will be examined in light-, confocal-, and electron microscopes. The goal is to explain the morphological substrate for how hormone release is controlled by the brain.

Thus, the project encompasses a considerable component of animal experimental work, which will include stereotactic surgery. In addition to the microscopy-based experiments, which constitute the core of the work associated with the position, the work may also include recordings of nerve cell activity and studies of behaviour.

The work includes management of smaller as well as larger projects. Participation in common group activities (such as weekly meetings with scientific presentations) and responsibility that the laboratory and its equipment is maintained in good order is also part of the employment. The postdoctoral trainee is expected to be able to supervise and practically demonstrate laboratory techniques, as well as assist in data analysis; supervision will primarily be directed towards other group members and undergraduate students.

Qualification requirements

In order to qualify for a Postdoctoral position, applicants are required to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent relevant degree from another country. The degree must have been completed no later than when the employment decision is made.

Assessment criteria

It is considered an advantage if the doctoral degree or an equivalent degree was completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Under special circumstances, an older degree may also be an advantage. Special circumstances refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

Requirements:
A doctoral degree in neuroscience or a neighbouring field, such as e.g. physiology.
Documented experience of independent practical work with advanced microscopy-based studies of the nervous system in experimental animals, in particular electron microscopy, and analysis of such data, is required, as well as expert knowledge of how neuronal properties can be manipulated by genetic means.

The applicant is required to have significant experience in gathering data and swiftly solving problems related to non-standardised data collection, with a particular focus on automated analysis of images acquired through microscopy.

Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

Merits:
The applicant will be knowledgeable about and experienced in the organization and function of the nervous system.

Experience of intracranial surgery applied to experimental animals (especially rodents), will be favourably considered in the assessment of applicants.

Considerable emphasis will be placed on your ability to independently conduct neuroscientific research and operating advanced equipment.

You are conscientious and enjoy solving problems, and you are attracted by a job that requires flexibility, and an ability to communicate and collaborate.

You need to be pedagogic and attentive as you will be supervising students.

You are organized and have great accuracy.

Personal suitability will be considered in the evaluation of candidates.

About the employment

The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date autumn, 2026 or as per agreement.
