Work assignments
Design aims to make alternative futures possible through systematic, experimental, human-centered, aesthetic and critical exploration. The subject area of Design is interdisciplinary, and perspectives and methods from both the technical/natural sciences, the social sciences/humanities and the artistic fields are used.
As a senior lecturer in design, you will teach at undergraduate and graduate levels in Swedish and English and supervise students in Linköping University’s various design-oriented programs. Teaching focuses primarily on participatory design, service design and interaction design. The work includes course design and course responsibility.
Design research encompasses a range of different activities, from scientific research to experimentation, often in the form of innovative combinations guided by a conscious need to deepen the understanding of what design is and how design could develop in the future. Design research is highly international, and is therefore conducted in both Swedish and English.
This position is located at the division Human-Centered Systems (HCS), in the research group Interaction and Service design research (IxS). The research group conducts design research with a focus on services and interaction. For the past 20 years, we have worked in various parts of the public sector, and for a few years now have been participating in knowledge development in the meeting between AI and design, as well as in the intersection between policy development and design. The division’s research and teaching is focused on studying and improving the interaction between individuals, computer systems and information resources. Humans and their abilities constitute both a starting point and a goal. Important research areas are service design, human-computer interaction, knowledge technology, language technology, geographic information systems, computer support for education/training, information management, the introduction of new technology in organizations and security in complex systems. Linköping University is one of Sweden’s leading design research and education universities, and is a world leader in, among other things, service design research.
You are active in the research community, participate in the division’s activities such as seminars and workshops, participate in research projects, communicate results through scientific publications and help attract external research funding.
You contribute actively to the university’s development work. Collaboration is an integral part of the university’s research and education mission.
- Collaboration in education takes the form of planning, organising and carrying out good education in cooperation with stakeholders from the surrounding society.
- Collaboration in research takes the form of disseminating, making available and utilising research.
The employment may also involve administrative duties, such as educational and research administration. We also encourage you to participate in and show interest in management duties.
Your work includes monitoring developments nationally and internationally within your field of study and other societal developments that are important to your work.

You share knowledge and contribute to the working group’s professional development, collegial ways of working and social community. Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has received a doctoral degree or has equivalent academic expertise, and has demonstrated pedagogical expertise or other professional skills that are of significance with consideration for the subject and duties relevant to the appointment and duties.
For this employment
- particular attention will be paid to academic and pedagogical expertise, and second to other proficiencies which are judged to be equivalent to each other.
In terms of pedagogical expertise, the following will be assessed:
- Requirements for the position is documented pedagogical expertise, as it has been demonstrated through teaching and supervision in design at bachelor’s and master’s level
- Of particular merit for the position is pedagogical expertise in the meeting between design and service contexts
- Of merit for the position is that the candidate has education in university pedagogy, through courses or other documented means
In terms of academic expertise, the following will be assessed:
- Requirements for the position is documented academic expertise and experience of research within two of the following sub areas
- Design in the form of participatory/cooperative design, codesign and/or designerly work
- Service in the form of service logics and/or service organisation
- Human-computer interaction in the form of interaction design and/or UX
- Of particular merit for the position is to have academic expertise in all three sub areas
- Of merit for the position is to have experience form planning, applying for and receiving research funding form external funders
- Of merit for the position is a research direction that strengthens or complements the research across the three research areas listed above in conjunction with the research of the division (see https://liu.se/en/organisation/liu/ida/hcs). Applicants are encouraged to acquaint themselves with these, and in the application submit a research plan for the first two years in relationship to this.
Of merit for the position is
- documented expertise in collaboration in education and research.
Other proficiencies that will be assessed for this position are administrative, leadership proficiency and/or technical proficiencies
- Requirements for the position is experience from practice-based research
- Of merit for the position is documented experience of administrative skills as it has been expressed e.g. in leadership positions
- Of merit for the position is documented ability to cooperate with general society an dits organisations, and to communicate research and development in such contexts
Where teaching and/or research is conducted in Swedish and English, then
- you must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and/or conduct research in English and it is desirable that within two years you can teach and/or conduct research in Swedish.
The workplace
The Department of Computer and Information Science was founded in 1983 but its roots go back to the early 1970s. It is one of the largest computer science departments in northern Europe. Our research covers a broad spectrum of fields, from core to applied computer sciences. Its vast scope also benefits our undergraduate and graduate programmes, and we now teach courses in several engineering programmes at bachelor’s and master’s levels, as well as the programmes in statistics, cognitive science and innovative programming.
