Articular cartilage injuries are widespread and can increase the risk of early onset osteoarthritis. The field of tissue engineering and bioprinting is constantly searching for new methods to create biomimetic tissue models which better replicate the organization of native tissues and promote their healing.  Here bioprinting strategies have the potential to revolutionize the functionality of tissues used in regenerative medicine.

The Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication Laboratory (Prof. Marcy Zenobi-Wong) within the Department of Health Sciences & Technolgy (D-HEST) at ETH Zürich in Zurich, Switzerland, uses bioprinting to produce tissues which address unmet clinical needs. The laboratory  has recently developed a light-based 3D printing technique, capable of creating architectural cues which guide cell alignment and extracellular matrix deposition.  Based on this technology, the next generation in situ printer will be developed to specifically treat articular cartilage injuries.

Project background

You will join a large European network interested in improving clinical options for cartilage repair.  The goal of this project is to validate a light based printer for use directly in the operation room.  This new printer will be able to crosslink photoresins and cells directly into the patient’s cartilage defect, thereby promoting regeneration of the joint.

Job description

  • Coordination of in vitro validation and modeling of printed cartilage
  • Coordination of pre-clinical testing of in situ printed cartilage
  • Oversight of regulatory and safety testing of device and contact with regulatory and standardization bodies
  • Contact with end-users stakeholders
  • Commercial exploitation of results
  • Project reporting and management
  • Interest in in silico modeling and machine learning approaches to predict scaffold potency (optional)

Profile

You have a PhD in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, biology, material science or related fields. Previous experience with startups, product commercialization, CE marking, and regulatory affairs is advantageous. This project is embedded within a large European consortium, therefore a flair for excellent written and oral communciation as well as effective and charismatic managerial skills are essential.
