Department

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 90 persons are employed at the Department and approximately 1000 students are enrolled every academic year. UCDP

The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) has recorded ongoing violent conflicts since the 1970s. The data provided is one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts and its definition of armed conflict is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied.

The department and UCDP is now looking for a substitute research assistant, for a 6 months employment, starting as soon as possible.

Duties

The main task will be to collect and code information on organized violence, with a focus on the Democratic Republic of Congo. More specifically, this will entail going through large quantities of material and evaluate it based on UCDP’s definitions and criterion, extract relevant information and enter it into UCDP’s coding interface, where it is also to be geo coded, i.e., receive geographical coordinates in line with a pre-determined system.

An additional task will be to update and write new texts in the program’s online encyclopedia. Other tasks may be added based on the needs of the program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in peace and conflict studies
  • Good knowledge of political violence and theories of war and peace
  • Very good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
  • Documented experience of working with conflict data (coding/data management)
  • Documented good knowledge of the armed conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Previous experience of geo coding
  • Proficiency in English (verbally and in writing)
  • Documented ability to work independently
  • Good cooperation skills.

Additional qualifications

Master’s degree in peace and conflict studies.

Individual suitability will be considered.

The employment is a; temporary position for 6 months (substitute position). Scope of employment: 100%/full-time. Starting date is: as soon as possible. Placement: Uppsala.
