Subject area
Materials Science specialising in Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME).
Subject description
The subject area comprises Materials Science with a focus on Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) as a strategic framework for internationally leading research and education. A central and necessary part of the subject area is deep expertise in the CALPHAD technique (Calculation of Phase Diagrams) for thermodynamic and kinetic modelling of multicomponent systems.
The subject area includes the development and application of advanced computational methods in which CALPHAD constitutes a core methodology for integrating phase diagrams, thermodynamics, diffusion and phase-transformation models with process-microstructure-property relationships, machine-learning methods and experimental methods. Particular emphasis is placed on materials design for advanced manufacturing, where additive manufacturing constitutes an important application area for the development, validation and implementation of ICME methodology, as well as on other manufacturing processes and material systems, including high-performance alloys, high-entropy materials and functionally graded materials, with applications in the energy, space and industrial sectors.
The subject area has a clear international profile and is expected to strengthen the position of KTH and the ITM School as leading players in Materials Science, digital materials development and sustainable industrial transformation.
Duties
The position includes responsibility for strategically developing and leading internationally recognised research in Materials Science specialising in ICME at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), School of Industrial Engineering and Management (ITM). The duties include initiating and conducting research at a high international level, attracting substantial external research funding, and establishing and leading strong research environments that bring together computational modelling, experimental validation, manufacturing, and collaboration with international universities, research institutes, industry and society.
The position also includes teaching and course development at first-cycle, second-cycle and third-cycle levels in Materials Science, materials design and computational methods, with particular responsibility for education in thermodynamic and kinetic modelling and the CALPHAD technique. The duties also include contributing to and further developing doctoral education and advanced courses in CALPHAD, ICME and related methods, as well as supervising doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and degree-project students. The professor is expected to actively contribute to the development of doctoral education and to strengthening the link between research and education.
The duties also include academic leadership, such as leading major research initiatives and research groups, participating in collegial bodies, contributing to strategic subject-area and operational development within MSE and the ITM School, and promoting gender equality, diversity and an inclusive academic environment.
Eligibility
A person is eligible for appointment as professor if they have demonstrated both research expertise and teaching expertise.
