We are looking for an up-and-coming researcher who wants to conduct pioneering research to take up a position as Assistant Professor (Associate Senior Lecturer) in Law with a focus on the rule of law and access to justice, in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, or health law

We are looking for a promising, academically young, researcher who can contribute to research in law with a focus on the rule of law and access to justice or health law.
As an Assistant Professor you will develop your qualifications over a period of 4 years and can then be promoted to permanent employment as a Senior Lecturer and eventually professor. You will receive five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education and get the opportunity to learn Swedish through the University’s Swedish language courses for new international staff. Duties – what we expect from you
We want you to thrive at Lund University and be able to make the best of your time at the Lund University and the Faculty of Law. As an Assistant Professor, you will have the chance to engage whole-heartedly in the research you are passionate about. The holder of this position will to a significant extent (60%) be able to allocate time for your own research in collaboration with strong research environments, research infrastructures and international platforms.
In addition to conducting research, during your time as Assistant Professor you will also develop your teaching expertise, outreach and collaboration skills, along with Swedish language proficiency. Throughout your employment, you are an active member of your department and participant in its diverse work.
We hope that one of your first duties will be to conduct an innovative research project that is funded by the Swedish Research Council.
The duties also include teaching and examining at first, second, third-cycle level, in the law programme, the faculty’s two master’s programmes and within the framework of the faculty’s distance and contract education. Some administrative and coordinating work is included. The faculty’s researchers and teachers are expected to contribute to a vibrant research environment and the faculty’s other activities and mainly conduct their work in the workplace.
Qualifications for employment as an Assistant Professor
To be eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor (Associate Senior Lecturer), the applicant must have completed Doctor of Laws degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a Doctor of Laws degree or have achieved equivalent scientific competence. In the first instance, we will prioritize the applicants who have completed a doctoral degree within the last 5 years, counted from the application date for the position. If you have documents that prove that there are special reasons, such as parental leave, military service or illness after graduation, that prevented you from working as a researcher, the degree in the subject can in such cases have been awarded earlier.
For an Assistant Professor (Associate Senior Lecturer), the general eligibility requirement is to be suitable for and have the ability in general needed to fulfil the duties in the position in question.
Qualifications – what you must have for this employment
To be able to be appointed as an Assistant Professor within the framework of Lund University Programme for Global Excellence, the applicant must have:
- A good ability to initiate, develop and implement high-quality research
- Good teaching ability
- Recent and relevant experience from research in the rule of law and access to justice, or health law outside Sweden
- A project plan (max 5 pages) for an innovative project in law with a focus on the rule of law and access to justice, or health law, that you submit with your application
- Documented good leadership skills, e.g. through elected office assignments, leadership courses and assessed
- Good communication skills
- Very good oral and written English language skills
- A motivation and the ability to learn Swedish
The applicant has further not received any renumeration or grant from Swedish employers or funding bodies from 31 December 2022 onwards.
When appointing an Assistant Professor within the framework of Lund University Programme for Global Excellence, both research and pedagogical skills must be taken into account. The focus of the assessment shall be on research skills.
Additional qualifications – other credentials that we consider desirable
We want you to thrive at Lund University and be able to make the best of your time at the Faculty of Law, and for that reason we consider it preferable if you can demonstrate that you:
- Contribute in a positive way to the work environment
- Have or have had a postdoctoral appointment
- Have experience of applying and obtaining research funding from funding bodies outside Sweden
- Currently hold an international position in the research field
- Particular emphasis will be placed on subject knowledge in law with a focus on the rule of law and access to justice, or health law
- Emphasis will also be placed on:
- documented international research and teaching experiences, for example in the form of publications, research and teaching visits, research collaborations and conference presentations.
- broad subject competence in both research and teaching in law with a focus on the rule of law and access to justice, or health law
Form of employment
The position is fixed-term, 4 years, in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance, with the opportunity for promotion to permanent employment as an Assistant Professor (Senior Lecturer).
The position is within the subject of Law with a focus on the rule of law and access to justice, in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, or in health law. The subject matter of the employment is determined in connection with the employment decision.
The position as Associate Senior Lecturer with a focus on the rule of law and access to justice is linked to the UN’s specific Sustainable Development Goal 16.3, which means that fundamental values of the rule of law such as the rule of law and access to justice with accountability at all levels are in focus. It deals with a wide range of legal issues, such as predictability in relation to public bodies, independent and impartial courts at national, European and international level, equality before the law, liability-related issues and redress such as damages. There is a need for legal research on the rule of law and access to justice.
The position as Associate Senior Lecturer in the specialisation Medical Law is linked to a growing international research area that deals with legal aspects of health-related issues. It is about a wide range of legal issues concerning people’s living conditions and (in)health, strengthening the rights of individuals in different health and care situations regionally, nationally and internationally, and highlighting the complex legal conditions for the rapid development of biomedical innovation. There is an increasing need for research with legal elements related to research in medicine and social sciences and the impact of rapid technological development in the field.
Promotion – what is required to be promoted to senior lecturer
When you are an Assistant Professor, you can apply for promotion to permanent employment as a Senior Lecturer. You will undergo a special assessment to determine if you fulfil the faculty’s requirements for employment as a senior lecturer. It is important for you to know that you can only apply once for promotion and that you must apply for promotion at least six months before your employment as an assistant professor ends.
When you apply for promotion, you will be assessed based on whether you have:
developed within your field during your time as an Assistant professor (Associate Senior Lecturer) good national and international standing as a researcher good teaching ability, which means a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities at different levels and using a variety of teaching methods ability to participate in supervision of doctoral students to achieve a doctoral degree ability to engage with wider society and communicate your activities ability in other contexts to lead and develop activities ability to teach in Swedish or another Scandinavian language and English is a requirement
